Subsequently, the Soviets returned Nagy to Hungary, where he was secretly charged with organizing the overthrow of the Hungarian people's democratic state and with treason. At the end of the Second World War, the Soviet Union’s Red Army had gained a vice-like over Eastern Europe. Because of his steadfast support of the peasants’ welfare, Nagy was excluded from the Communist government in 1949 but was readmitted after making a public recantation. The monument to Imre Nagy, a hero of the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising, is by local sculptor Tamás Varga. In 1989, after the end of the Cold War, Nagy’s grave was found with other victims from the 1956 Uprising in an area overrun with weeds etc. In the communist government, he served as Minister of Agriculture and in other posts. Nagy led a coalition government that included three non-communists from the Petofi Peasants Party, the Smallholders Party and the Social Democratic Party.
