14th September 2014. Mayhew spoke to hundreds of Londoners of various character, backgrounds and occupations and recorded his findings and the conversations he had.

My Grandad lived with us and he had a certain style of whistling and on asking, he told me that it was a Lighterman’s Call he got from his Uncle Jim, a Lighterman.

The film is being shown at the historic Watermans Hall. This year our film be shown as part of the festival. It was our place for adventure, skimming stones, eel spotting and playing pirates aboard a skeletal remains of a barge, all in the shadow of St Mary’s Church where my parents got married. I have already discovered that the central span of the Vauxhall Temporary Bridge was made at the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company. In the nineteenth century the introduction of steam powered tug boats allowed several lighters to be towed at once, but the equation of one-lighterman-one-lighter persisted. Even more exciting was the good condition of the letter in the Museum’s archives section, an extra bonus was that there was more written information on the reverse for me to research. At this event he gave a talk about his time during World War Two, and also performed a poem he has written about his time in the industry. They were closely associated with the watermen, who carried passengers, and in 1700 joined the Company of Watermen to form the Company of Watermen and Lightermen. The trade goes back to Roman times and before but was first licensed under Henry VIII 500 years ago. The childlren will also be visiting the National Maritime Museum where a curator will introduce them to the Thames Maritime Exhibition. We have edited a shorted version of the oral history based documentary produced as part of this project which is now being shown as part of the exhibition until May 15th 2016. It was a really lovely event, presented by the children, who spoke about the project, showed the film, read a poem inspired by the project and took part in a Q&A.

Working with arts and education charity digital-works children from St George The Martyr and Westminster Cathedral primary schools in London have been exploring this history. On Tuesday July 14th the documentary made by the children with digital:works was launched at the Museum of London Docklands. Thanks very much to the Lighterage Committee. I was pleased that its condition was better than the black and white photo suggested. Amongst my findings, was one of J. D. Taylor’s sons, Joseph Taylor, a Lighterman, living at 73 Stamford Street, Marsh Ward District, Lambeth between 1890 and 1904. They were used to off load ("lighten") the cargo of merchant ships delivering to the Port of London.

We are also working with the Museum of London, Docklands, in London with galleries and exhibitions exploring the history of the river and London's river communities. Whilst meticulously searching, I came upon an interesting article on the Museum of London website titled The broken sword and the vanishing bridge by John Clark. She spoke about the problems she faced, frequently outright hostility, and how she battled through and eventually became a union rep. We tried very hard to get both Jane and Ted to come along to be interviewed by the children during the project but unfortunately neither could make the dates, so we were very pleased to have them both come to this event and we recorded both of their funny and moving talks. Almost all of the lightermen interviewed knew the poem but noone knew who had written it. Learning material linked to the primary school curriculum is now being developed which, along with the film and visits to the Museum of London, Docklands, will enable schools across London to explore this important and wonderful history. The inaugural Totally Thames was enjoyed by over 2.7 million people, who attended over 170 river related events throughout the month of September. Lightermen were one of the most characteristic groups of workers in London's docks during the heyday of the Port of London, but their trade was eventually rendered largely obsolete by changes in shipping technology. Thanks so much to everyone who came along. We even managed to fit a sing song in. This project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This year our film be shown as part of the festival. Running alongside the schools project was a reminiscence group of retired Lightermen run by Age-Exchange. This was an opportunity to explore their history and share memories.
