By the late 19th century, with the men’s game spreading across Britain like wildfire, women also began to take up association football.

However, the women's game soon became overshadowed by the return and growth of the male game. But these were also exceptional times. Some accounts say that the games were watched by a crowd of single men, who hoped to pick out a potential bride based on her footballing ability. “I advertised in the local press for anybody who knew anybody to get in touch, and the appeal worked,” says Newsham.

The Dick, Kerr’s side continued to play at non-FA grounds, becoming Preston Ladies FC in 1926 after Frankland fell out with the factory owners; Parr remained with them until her retirement in 1951, aged 46. The achievements of Dick, Kerr’s Ladies were pushed into the shadows by a footballing establishment that was embarrassed by women’s success. On 5 December 1921 the FA cited strong opinions about football’s unsuitability for females. The daughter of the Marquess of Queensberry, Dixie was an ardent believer in equality between the sexes, and worked as a field correspondent for the Morning Post during the First Boer War.

“They were sportswomen, which was good because that gave them a feeling of how to be a sportsperson, whether it be football, netball or whatever, and not to go out drinking on a Friday night,” she laughs. Although spectators may have originally turned up to delight in the undignified spectacle, reports from the time suggest they found themselves enthralled by the quality of play. After a short illness, she died in September 2016, aged 71. “We’d go to the cup final,” says Lopez, “and this top-notch bloke, whoever he was, would come along and present the trophy. The team had always fielded gifted players, but by 1920 they had unearthed their one true genius: Lily Parr. A love of the game was something Sylvia Gore never lost.

“They kept on threatening that they would ban people who went to play in Italy. In 1971 the FA finally lifted the ban on women's football. Lopez even managed Southampton in the mid-2000s. This all changed when the Football League suspended all of its matches at the end of the 1914-15 season.

Her achievements were finally recognised in 2002, when she became the first woman to inducted into the Football Hall of Fame at the National Football Museum in Preston, 24 years after her death. “We would get some good, young, promising players, but we had no youth teams,” remembers Lopez.

They remain the most successful women's team of all time, says the the museum.

Fast forward to now and women's football is a global phenomenon. When it did, and without the restrictions imposed in England, the United States emerged as the benchmark for women’s football during the second half of the 20th century.

She remembers one particular ground where the changing rooms were chicken huts with an oil drum to use as a toilet. “We played on park pitches in Frog Lane and had nothing,” Sylvia Gore recalled of her time representing Manchester Corinthians.
