Gold was found in the Arrow River in 1862, and a township of 1,000 miners soon sprang up. The Mary Cotter tree is a tree named for 2 year old Mary Cotter who danced around the sapling at the suggestion of the workmen planting the trees in 1867. Nearby is the luxury Millbrook Resort, which has a spa and 27-hole golf course. The small yellow cottage was originally built as a miner's house around 1870 and in 1897 Sister Mary MacKillop converted the cottage into a convent for the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart who worked in New Zealand and Australia. Before Europeans settlers came to New Zealand, Maori walked through the area on seasonal trips to hunt native birds, and find the prized pounamu (greenstone). But the forceful Fox took credit for the discovery and the ragged new “town” was first called Fox’s.
