The pacing is great, the lead actress and actors are great with the exception of the old lady and some extras, she overdone it a bit in my opinion. The opening scene is great, Joko and team chose a fantastic location to shoot. Womanhood, and especially motherhood, are a fertile source of emotional horror. Korea, Japan, and Thailand are probably still kings in this matter, but I'm sure sooner or later Indonesia will catch up to those three thanks to the creative power of individuals like Jokan and the Mo Brothers. Ki Saptadi is influenced by his mother, Nyi Misni (Christine Hakim, Merantau) and she is essentially this evil witch that you love to hate. Everything was on the right place. Scoring is really unique and somehow will keep you feel uncomfortable and tense all the time, added with constant creepiness of the setting and believable acts. Impetigore can be silly, but that’s what makes it so fun. Joko really pressed the actors to act the same way as if they're professional. Is it better than the satan slaves? But it is not a big thing, dude. Tara and Marissa acting great though. I found this story not too interesting to follow-there are better narrated stories out there which have successfully made me 'curious, exasperated, grumpy & shocked' once at a time from the start to the end of em; such as Oldeuboi (2003), Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da/ I Saw the Devil (2010), for instance. It turns out the Harjosari Village is cursed; all of their children have been born without skin for the past 20 years. He previously made the amazing horror movie Satan’s Slaves so our expectations for this new movie were huge. The movie successfully showed us everything we needed to know without using a lot of dialogue (although it could have been greatly improved) Like so many other critics, I would also say that the flashbacks were way too long (and somewhat confusing?).

But as a whole movie, means nothing. Probably one of the best horror of the year.

The Monstrous Feminine.

Before watching it, I expect it will be really scary like "Pengabdi Setan", which also directed by the same person. One particularly gory sequence takes place behind the linen screen used in Wayang Kulit, with the spraying blood and butchered bodies strikingly silhouetted. If only this movie was done differently, it would have been goodish. Atmospheric,good location and colourful.weak plot &scary scenes are ok. Whoever you are, thank you for making this film!

Indonesia proves once again that have good horror cinema and, although this is not the case, action gore genre example RAID and sequel. There's quite a bit of humor early on between the pair, but as the situation gets serious, the laughs gradually disappear. The writer also the director, which seriously I don't understand why everyone so overhyped with this overrated movie. Impetigore proves to be a worthy follow-up to Satan's Slaves, Joko Anwar's 2017 Indonesian horror surprise. I understand that his mother killed herself in grief and I wish they had a conversation (about how the mother did all that for her son) although that might have 'interfered' in a way with the theme of the movie. This movie exceeds my expectation from the usual indonesian horror movie genre.

Impetigore is a classic example of the modern-day ghost story. What I don't really like about the movie: Maya and Dini head to Harjosari Village in hopes of Maya receiving a big inheritance, but the villagers have something more sinister in mind. I'm not much of a big witch/ghost horror fan, but this flick took me by surprise.

Anwar is a filmmaker who puts atmosphere ahead of obvious scares, and there's a slow build to the next big fright, as Maya and Dini head to the village to find the potential inheritance. The man that attacked her mentioned Harjosari Village and called her Rahayu. The actors and actress they chose are truly incredible, including the villagers.

Oh talking about Mo Brothers, their next projects, "Ratu Ilmu Hitam" and "Sebelum Iblis Menjemput Ayat 2", will be released 3 weeks in the future and in the next year.

Then I realize why: the story and the script and everything in it. At one point, a little girl appears in the passenger seat in a moving car only to rip off the flesh from her face and cause the driver to crash the car.

So, it had the template from an already great storyline scary movie. This one started off very well, a young woman working in a toll booth during the wee hours, a man passes the booth regularly n stares at her giving her the creepy vibes. Harjosari Village screams that same kind of unsettling horror. Way awful, and not scary at all. 0.

The town leader, Ki Saptadi (Ario Bayu, Headshot), is an expert at shadow puppetry. One of my favorite aspect of this film is the depiction of a culture that feels sacred and real. Weak in everything. The plot was great, this story is incredibly rich.

Traditional and cultural elements are blended in the details in several scenes. With a stunning opening scene set at an urban toll-booth, Anwar immediately demands our attention and draws us into the story of Maya, Dini, and their financial struggles. Anwar's latest movie, Impetigore, is set to join them, and hits Shudder this week. For example there's a scene when the women are exploring the house and Maya finds pictures of her parents and you see what seems like a ghost walking closer to her. But while Impetigore is visually striking throughout, it does fall down on a story level.

It's official now: the future of cinema no longer resides in the US!!! The need for streaming services to find content has really helped these movies breakthrough internationally, with Netflix and Shudder respectively giving these two films high profile US releases. In a typical horror movie, you'd see 'the ghost' (which was actually just her friend ) scare her and we would all jump with her and be relieved when we'd realize that it's just Dini.

Weak DOP. Indonesian horror can be pretty crazy and writer and director Joko Anwar doesn’t disappoint with his horror film Impetigore.
