On the trail of an eccentric artist in North Carolina, a recently wed Chicago gallery owner (Davidtz) gets to meet her new family. Has a washed-out look that may be off-putting to auds who might otherwise enjoy the pic's uncondescending view of Southern characters and customs. She meets them – her mother in law (Celia Weston), father in law (Scott Wilson), brother in law (Benjamin Mckenzie), and his perky, pregnant wife Ashley (Amy Adams). But Junebug isn’t really that film. Happily, Morrison's actors grasp his intentions perfectly, shading their roles so well that we never quite get a handle on anyone. Throughout the film, there are occasional shots of empty rooms, silent streets and dark woods that are at odds with the message conveyed by the action.

A textbook case of filmmakers who can't make up their minds about their characters; it's a failure of nerve disguised as dramatic ambiguity. The "haters" here complain this movie is slow, plot less and stereotypes Southerners. The fact that nobody talked and there was no plot made this a boring movie. My kind of movie, in theory - small, character-driven, slightly off-center.

As for the technicals, the picture here is generally very good, and actually worthy of a Blu-ray upgrade, even if the film isn’t the most obvious choice for one you’d want in high definition. The ambiguity of family and the intricacies of relationships in this film encourage the movie goer to rethink the confused and sometimes absurd moments we experience while finding ways to fit in- or not. Top-notch American indie filmmaking. To say this was slow, mundane and pointless is to give too much credit to this awful movie. If I had paid $8 I would have asked for my money back.
